Imagine.
I imagine scenarios in my head quite often. It’s something I’ve done my whole life, but it has gotten worse in the last few years since I began living alone. A few of my friends would call it obsessing, and they would be right. The other day when I was running I tried to come up with a list of things I’ve been imagining lately. My next step is to act on some of these things. Or...

Missing Esme.
Lots of people have stories about their journey knowing Esme Barrera, because she knew everyone and was the very best. I think writing and sharing helps some through such a terrible time. And for others, they have a private journey. This is just my story. Part journey, part grief, part guilt.  When I was 19, I joined the Weezer messageboard. I had no idea how to use the Internet, and probably...

My 2012 Resolution.
Yes, just one that’s public. The others of mine are private for me to conquer on my own. My friend Grace posted this on Twitter yesterday and it’s the Resolution/Motto/Quote/Thought I plan to live by this year. “Allow the world to live as it chooses, and allow yourself to live as you choose.” - Richard Bach This has never been more true or in apparent need in my life. I want to...

Tops of the Pops.
Top 5 Moments of 2011. Running a marathon. Walking across the stage to receive my Masters degree. 30 state roadtrip with my good friend Miles. Camping at Mustang Island with my dad. Toss up between Local Natives at Stubb’s and Sleigh Bells at La Zona.  Top 5 Things Learned in 2011. Marathons are very hard to run and tough on your body. (Somehow, this surprised me?) Relationships...

Books in 2011.
I used to keep meticulous records of all the books I read every year. I even found a list from 2004 the other day where I’d read over 50 that year. This year I hit 33 books which is not too bad. Almost one a week! Now that I’m not in graduate school, I plan to read more. Especially more non-fiction, learning type books rather than repeats of The Hunger Games. Click through to see the...

lists.
my next set of lists needs to be something like: The single lady who lives alone’s list of things to do that don’t involve laying on the couch and watching TV for days on end. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Currently:
My weeknights but mainly weekends go something like this: Make list of all things that need to be done. Feel confident about said list. Go to sleep Friday night, wake up Saturday, feel less confident. Spent most of Saturday and Sunday so stressed out about all the things that need to be done, I stare at the ceiling from my couch or bed too overwhelmed to move. Can’t breath. Can’t...

30 is OVER.
2 days away until I’m 31 years old. So much has happened in my late 20s, that I’m ready to get on the road of the 30s, for sure. This past year was one for the books. If I was going to turn 30, I was going to do it right. The main things that I’m proud of are as follows: Ran the Austin Marathon Visited 31 states (I meant to visit 30, but miscounted.)  Finishing up my Masters...

Weight & Running.
Inspired by OneTwentyFive and Preheat 26.2, I’m going to talk about my marathon/running/weight struggles. I’ve been running since 9th grade, when a coach told me I could play varsity basketball if I ran cross country. But after a huge break-up in 2008, is when I really started running. Well I started running more than 5 miles. Then I ran a half marathon in 2009. In that process, I...

i have convinced myself that the older i get, the more likely i will never be in a relationship again. the disturbing thing is that increasingly….i’m ok with that. it’s probably just my grad school frenzy taking over. but i have now been single for the last 3 years, after being in a 7ish year relationship. i love living alone. i hate dealing with people. it’s ok if i...

If you want to read this, you can.
It is a story I wrote about a former student that died over a year ago. I wrote about him in my graduate program in the summer of 2010. It is very long and still makes me cry. The call came on a Sunday night. I was frantically preparing lesson plans for the next day, curled up in my covers. Why would my boss be calling me? Ugh. “Kerissa, there’s been a car accid-“ “Who?” I interrupt. My thoughts...

a 30 year old summer.
Summer is a time that I greatly identify with. It helps being a teacher. This summer I decided to not work any extra and really do what I wanted to do.  It’s probably the first time in my life I’ve done what I want, when I wanted. Without consulting anyone. I’ve kind of been a jerk, to tell you the truth. But I really needed this selfish time in my life.  All of that ends on...

sometimes.
sometimes when i’m on an airplane, i get very scared. i start thinking and wondering, “what if the plane starts going down? will i have time to turn my phone on?” i think of the people i would text to tell them i love them. if there’s someone you would text ‘i love you’ to as the plane is going down, shouldn’t you probably just tell them anyways? ...

A visualization of my road trip via Gowalla...
I just took a road trip. It was a doozy of a trip that was hastily thrown together and done. I have a lot to say about this trip but my thoughts are still forming and the trip is still sinking into my brain parts. One thing I knew that was important for me was checking in on Gowalla during the 10 day adventure. I use Gowalla in my hometown to see what’s good to eat, where my friends are,...

Losing CTRL at Sleigh Bells.
In an article written by Luke Winkie on the AV Club website today, he said “Sleigh Bells is like a hardcore band for people who stopped listening to hardcore 10 years ago.” 10 years ago, I was rocking out to Death Cab for Cutie and Mates of State. The hardest thing I was listening to was Desaparecidos, which is a joke. I have always been pretty reserved, so when I stumbled upon Sleigh...

Happy Birthday Maddison.
Last year, on this day, as I was frantically trying to keep my students from making 4/20 jokes, I received a call that my sister in law was headed to the hospital. After work, I hopped in my car and quickly made the 3 hour drive to Fort Worth. About 30 minutes before I got there, Maddison was born. I rushed into the hospital, but the baby was already in the nursery/with the nurses/behind closed...

In the next 4 days (sxsw-ers), chances are you will reach a point that your phone is going to die. And you won’t be able to do anything about it. Last night, I was at 6% and broke my own rule by not having a backup battery or my charger. Luckily a friend had a plug charger and I crouched down behind the PS3 Station at PureVolume for a good 20 minutes to get some juice. If you have an iPhone...

SXSWi picks of the weekend!
SXSW Interactive is upon us, and already a day old. I was too busy having fun times yesterday to remember to tell you what I think will be FUNFUNFUN. I love Interactive. Although it seems a bit more crowded than any other year, the options are fewer, so the choices are easier. The music is great, the drinks are aplenty, the conversations are tech. Oh, I just...

twitter things you should know.

Tweeting during the marathon:
“I wish I could subconsciously tweet while on a run.” I said this. And after I said it I also thought, “What would happen during the marathon if I did this?” And I think it goes a little something like this. Starting Line: Holycrapholycrapholycrapholycrap. #austinmarathon Mile 1: Lots of people cheering, life is good. A little crowded. #donttouchme Mile 3: Headphones...

Cheap & Successful: A Newcomer's Guide to SXSW.
Now that I’ve done SXSW a time or two, it is always interesting that new visitors (or non visitors) think you have to buy a badge or wristband to have a good time that fateful week in March. Definitely not the case. It doesn’t hurt to have one of those, of course, but there are still so many great options out there for the poor person. (Or just not...

Marathon Training: Tips N Tricks.
4 weeks left. I’m ready. I think I’m ready. But this update is more about the things I’ve learned running with a group. I figured I might as well impart my wisdom in case you ever want to train for a marathon and don’t want to pay to run with a group. And in case you didn’t already know all this stuff (which most people might). 1. Salonpas:      These pain relieving...

67 Movies in 2010.
On a web board that I’ve been on for 10 years, someone posed the challenge of watching 365 movies in 1 year. I knew that I would not reach that, but I thought it’d be interesting to see how far I got. 67 is the answer. I am almost positive that I missed about 4-5 just from not remembering to update. 67 movies is a lot to me. That’s more than 1 per week. I think what would be more...

A Top 10 Life List of 2010.
The Top 10 things I learned in 2010 in no particular order. Having a niece is one of the best things to ever happen in my life. Dating is hard. I’m really terrible at it. I’m really good at making dudes go away though! Yay? Living alone is the absolute best. Netflix streaming is one of man’s greatest inventions. Training for a marathon will be rewarding. I just know it. ...

The Story of the Photofacial.
Photofacial. Sounds scary. I’d had microdermabrasions before, and those aren’t that scary. But I’m 30 now, and I noticed some sun damage on my young looking face so I decided to give it a try. I got a groupon (of course) to Urban Dentistry & Laser Spa. Great ladies over there. They put two doses of numbing cream on your face for about 40 minutes. The effects of which lasted a...
